Ticket to win

Week after week, for 95 weeks, there could have been a winner and people would have moved on with their lives. But week after week, no one selected the winning square on a progressive pull-tab raffle hosted by the Knights of Columbus, and the jackpot kept growing. So did the crowd. For a chance to win hundreds of thousands of dollars, people began showing up at 11 a.m. to get a table for the 7 p.m. drawing. On the 96th night the prize had climbed to $625,000 when Cynthia Fleischli’s name was pulled from the drum.

With only three unopened squares remaining on the game card, Fleischli went with square No. 80 because that’s the year she graduated from high school. It was her lucky number.
